Creating Summer Memories with Chemistry and Art: Summer Workshops at Gakudos in Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures (September 30, 2013)

Save the Children Japan (SCJ) supports after-school care programs (gakudos) in a number of ways so that children can enjoy themselves every day. Some of the activities organized by SCJ are workshops over the summer vacation provided in cooperation with various corporations. These corporations visit gakudos to give workshops, hoping to instill pleasant summer memories in the children who spend long days at gakudo, as well as in the gakudo staff who daily work so hard taking care of the children. A total of 1,244 children and 154 gakudo staff have participated in these activities in Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures. This summer we organized seven different types of workshop. We would like to introduce you to the activities conducted by two corporations that have continuously given us their support.

◆    It is so exciting to watch chemistry experiments!

The first workshop was a chemistry experiment using “magic powder” (silicon dioxide or silica) conducted by Evonik, an industrial group from Germany. This has been very popular at every location as both the children and gakudo staff greatly enjoys the experiment. This year, the experiment was organized in two locations in Iwate (Rikuzentakata City and Yamada Town) and one location in Miyagi (Ishinomaki City). A total of 192 children and 23 gakudo staff took part in these workshops.

What made the children’s eyes particularly sparkle was an experiment where they put their hand covered with silica powder into the water of an aquarium. After taking their hand out of the water, they found that it wasn’t wet at all. They became absorbed in putting their hand into the aquarium, shouting, “Fantastic!” and “How come?” They enjoyed doing it over and over until the desks, chairs and their clothes were all wet. Through this mysterious experiment using the “magic” silica powder children were able to learn while playing. This chemistry experiment is very popular among the participants.

<Children>

Ÿ  “It was mysterious!”

Ÿ  “It was fun! We could erase the effect with a toothbrush!”

<Gakudo staff>

Ÿ  “The children showed great enthusiasm! Everyone watching the experiment was so curious!”

Ÿ  “We had great fun along with the children!”

Ÿ  “It is a pity that the children have to stay inside the gakudo during the summer vacation, so we appreciate these opportunities so much!”

◆    Children were so serious in selecting colors at the art workshop!

The second event was an art workshop that used 500 color pencils provided by Felissiomo Corporation. From the illustrations drawn we could recognize the personality of each individual child. This year, a total of 378 children and 52 gakudo staff joined in this activity at two locations in Iwate (Rikuzentakata City and Kamaishi City) and one location in Miyagi (Ishinomaki City).

Looking carefully at natural objects like flowers, fruits and shells in their hand, the children carefully choose five colors that they saw or felt. They created one piece of work by applying each color on top of the others. At the end of the workshop, an exhibition of the children’s works was displayed. Then, an art therapist and lecturer thoroughly appraised each work in front of everybody. The children at first looked confused, but once they got over their embarrassment they showed smiling faces full of confidence.

The children directly expressed what they felt and their works were accepted, recognized and appraised in front of their friends. They came to appreciate their friends’ works, and realized how extraordinary they are. This summer, the children were able to express their talent in art.

<Children>

Ÿ  “Each color pencil has an interesting name.”

Ÿ  “(Looking at his friends’ works) They use beautiful colors.”

Ÿ  “This color became that of shells. I love this color so much.”

< Gakudo staff >

Ÿ  “Some children say that they are not good at drawing. But as opposed to drawing, the children looked happy coloring.”

Ÿ  “I was impressed to see the children concentrating, and realized that they are capable of doing it if they try.”

Ÿ  “Through their works, I discovered new characteristics of each child that I hadn’t realized before. This was also an event for us to feel and think about various new things.”

After the workshop, children brought some of their precious summer memories back home with them. We heard that they had talked about the event with their family members, and shared their smiles with them.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the corporations that came all the way to Tohoku to evoke smiles from the gakudo children. We would also like to express our thanks to the children’s families, the gakudo staff, as well as to the many other people who are supporting SCJ.

SCJ also conducts these workshops for gakudo staff to provide them with new ideas for their daily nursery activities as a part of their training. We will continue to give our assistance to gakudo staff that provide such valuable support to families and establish safe environments for children.
