The Children’s Community Building Clubs of Tohoku Summit Receives Kids Design Award! (July 29, 2013)

The Children’s Community Building Clubs of Tohoku Summits have been conducted four times since November, 2011. They form a vital part of our community building program, “Speaking Out From Tohoku ~ Building Better Communities through the Participation of Children.” On July 29, 2013, the Summit received an Encouragement Prize (Kids Design Council Chairperson Prize) at the 7th Kids Design Award!

The Kids Design Awards are a competition to reward designs that: contribute to the safety and comfort of children; cultivate creativity in children; and support the comfortable raising of children. We participated in the Reconstruction Support Design Section of the competition, and the Summit was evaluated as a striking work in that section!

The Children’s Community Building Clubs of Tohoku Summits provide opportunities for children to convey their thoughts and opinions on the community building and reconstruction of their own towns to policymakers, administrative officers, parents and other adult members of the community. The children involved are fourth graders to senior high school students from the Children’s Community Building Clubs in Yamada Town and Rikuzentakata City of Iwate Prefecture, and Ishinomaki City of Miyagi Prefecture. The Summits also create a place where both children and adults can think and discuss together with the aim of building better communities.

The Summits have so far welcomed a total of 347 children and 456 adults. They have the following features:

・Whilst being members of the community, children rarely have the opportunity to express their own opinions on reconstruction plans or community building. Through these Summits, children can directly and repeatedly convey their thoughts to policymakers from the municipal to the national level!

・Children manage the Summits by themselves (though they accept some support from adults). They plan the Summit (decide on the title and themes for discussion), act as MCs, manage the reception, guide guests and control the sound and lighting! The roles children take upon themselves depend upon their individual stage of development.

・In order to help children and adults exchange their opinions as equals in a relaxed atmosphere, particular attention is paid to the creation of the programs and environment, including the layout and decoration of the venues.
